Down to Earth to Open New Location and Expand Kahului Store

Even as it faces increased competition from Whole Foods, Down to Earth is slated to open a new store on Oahu in 2011, according to a recent company release and Pacific Business News dispatch. The health food chain–founded on Maui in the ’70s–is also planning to remodel and expand its Kahului store.
Here’s the most curious line in the PBN report: “Down to Earth is the only known all-vegetarian natural foods store in Hawaii.”
Leaving open the possibility, perhaps, that there are unknown all-vegetarian health food stores somewhere on the Islands. Sounds like a …

Grill all year on Maui with ready made marinated meats at our local grocery stores

Our small local food markets make it easy to throw your favorite local meats on, and the butchers make their own marinades. When you pick up your pau hana six pack you can grab a container of already marinated to perfection Kalbi ribs, korean chicken, teriyaki beef or chicken. Takamiya Market in Wailuku makes an awesome sweet Kalbi, you can pick from the quantities on hand or call their butcher in the morning to special order your quantity. They also have pre-made mac salad and local food favorites. You will find the same at Pukalani Superette, but I honed in on their made on Maui hot dogs

Teriyaki Hamburger Steak at Sheik’s

Well, I was a little eager to dive in, and started chowing on da rice before I remembered to snap a shot of my favorite dish at my favorite dive. Mmm… My tastebuds are jealous of themselves.
(P.S. Snagged the Gowalla spot! Woo hoo!)

Maui Whole Foods is Almost Open – Highlights Here

Whole Foods Market is coming to the Maui Mall, with its Grand Opening announcement and commencement on Wednesday, February 24, 2010. I have been titillated by the prospect of perusing the aisles and shelves of the Whole Foods market, despite my undying support for the smaller locally owned and operated health food stores. I have been peering in the windows since they took the construction privacy wall

Despite all of the dreary economic indicators for Maui county plenty of restaurateurs decided to give it a go. After all, everyone must eat! I say bravo to the brave food and beverage entrepreneurs whose spirits weren’t dampened by locations that have yet to hold a successful eatery despite other attempts, or the daunting liquor commission and planning commission hoops to jump through.

Asian Star is a Great Find in Wailuku Millyard

I didn’t expect to find exceptional Vietnamese food in the Wailuku Millyard area, I stumbled upon it. Although Wili Pa Loop is also home to Sam Sato’s famous for their noodles, it is definitely a surprise to find another great restaurant hidden up here among printing businesses, union offices and dentists. A few facts: Asian Star is open for lunch and dinner. Their menu is extensive with over 90 individual items organized by starches and protein categories. They also have a bar and wine and beer lists at the tables. …
